Trace Analyzer Installation

Prerequisites

A Java Virtual Machine supporting Java 2 must be correctly installed and configured on the target workstation in order for the Trace Analyzer to run.  The Trace Analyzer will only work with Java 2.  It will not run with Java versions 1.1.x or earlier.  Please see the Technical Specifications section for a list of Java Virtual Machines which have been tested with the Trace Analyzer.

Installation Steps

Installation of the Trace Analyzer is generally a straightforward process.  The product typically is distributed electronically for evaluation purposes.  For permanent licenses, the distribution will be via CD-ROM, optionally preceded by an electronic distribution.

The installation steps to follow are slightly different, depending upon the method of distribution.

Electronic Distribution

The Trace Analyzer is distributed electronically as a single ZIP archive.  The file is named JTA.ZIP.

The license key file, LICENSE.JTA, is not included in the electronic distribution.  Rather, it is sent separately in a zip file (typically LICENSES.ZIP) and must be applied to the product as part of the installation (see step 3).

The following steps describe the installation of the electronic distribution of the product:

  1. Copy JTA.ZIP to the directory of your choice on your hard drive.  You may choose any location you wish with enough space available (see Hardware Requirements).
  2. Unzip the zipped archive file, JTA.ZIP.  When unzipping the file, be sure to preserve the directory structure stored in the ZIP archive, and to preserve long filenames.  A JTA subdirectory containing the program files will be created if the archive is properly unzipped.  At this point, the JTA.ZIP file is no longer necessary and may be removed.
  3. Unzip the file LICENSE.JTA from the ZIP archive LICENSES.ZIP file into the JTA\LICENSE subdirectory created in step 2.  You will have received this zip archive file separately from the JTA.ZIP file, most likely via e-mail, directly from Golden Code Development.  The LICENSE.JTA file enables the Trace Analyzer and may impose certain restrictions on an evaluation version of the product.  See the Licensing section for more information.
  4. Read and accept the accompanying License Agreement (license.html in the license subdirectory).  If you have received an evaluation license, this document will be entitled "Software Trial License Agreement".  If you have purchased a production license, this document will be entitled "Software License Agreement".  If you do not agree with the terms of the license agreement which applies to your installation, you must remove all Trace Analyzer files from your system(s) and destroy all copies thereof.
  5. Proceed to Next Steps.

CD-ROM Distribution

When distributed on CD-ROM, the product is organized within the root directory of the CD-ROM according to the directory structure described in the File Listing section of this manual.  The program should not be run directly from the CD-ROM, as it will not be able to save its configuration files to the JTA/config subdirectory on the read-only CD-ROM media.  However, the user documentation (JTA/docs/userman.html) and license agreement (license/license.html) can be viewed directly from the CD-ROM.

Since each CD-ROM is burned for a specific customer, the appropriate license key file, LICENSE.JTA already will have been installed in the JTA/license subdirectory.

For convenience of installation, a ZIP archive named JTA.ZIP has been created, which contains the entire JTA subdirectory.  This file resides in the root directory of the CD-ROM.

The following steps describe the installation of the CD-ROM distribution of the product:

  1. Read and accept the Software License Agreement (license.html in the JTA/license subdirectory).  If you do not agree with the terms of the license agreement which applies to your installation, you must not install or use the Trace Analyzer product and you should return all copies of the product CD-ROM.  Note:  if your organization has purchased an enterprise license, the enterprise license agreement will take precedence over the license agreement contained in the license.html document.
  2. Copy JTA.ZIP to the directory of your choice on your hard drive.  You may choose any location you wish with enough space available (see Hardware Requirements).
  4. Proceed to Next Steps.

Next Steps

If, at this point, you have followed the steps above for the applicable Trace Analyzer distribution method, the installation process should be complete.  To run the Trace Analyzer program, proceed to the Command Line Syntax section.
